Talking Vagina Ad by Summer’s Eve Offends Many Black Women

By JasmineHughes

When advertisers try to ‘appeal’ to a specific audience on whom they have failed to do their research, the outcome isn’t so great. That was the case once again in a new Summer’s Eve advertisement that many are saying mixes racial stereotypes in a way that is both sexist and tasteless.

The “Summer’s Eve Hail to the V: Lady Wowza” commercial promotes a women’s cleansing product rather candidly, as do most of their commercials, but this one was a little different. In the 55 second video, a Black woman’s hand can be seen, cupped in a shape of a vagina. The talking “V,” named Lady Wowza, begins a monologue speaking to the person it is attached to.

As a Black woman, I’m supposed to be mad because of some hairstyles on a sideways talking hand posing as my Puma? Are we not getting the real message because we see some bouncy curls and the club talk and immediately push the red nuclear Hate War button?

See, we are so quickly to get offended by stuff like this, but let a rap star call us Bitches, Hoes, Skanks and words worst than that and it’s “OMG He’s so fine!  I just love the truth he spits!  I wanna have his babies!”

We really need to get our priorities straight.  A clean coochie is nothing to be offended at.  Now if the talking V had Popeye’s chicken, a Slice of Watermelon and one of the styles was Pick-a-nanny braids, then we could be offended.

You can’t be a blk woman. Blk women would find both of those issues offensive. Who is we? You should get offended about that ad. If you get offended by disrespectful rappers, why not get offended about disrespectful ad campaigns? If you allow or accept one inappropriate behavior, you might as well allow the other. You have to have more respect for yourself as a blk female than that. When they target white females with products made for them, you don’t see offensive ads like that. Why the f would accept it as a “blk woman”?
That’s like comparing blk women to the vagina or something.
