A Star is Born: 13-Year Old Girl Heads to College

Autum Shante is not your typical 13-year old.  She’s a poet with a high IQ who has mastered three different languages, has a strong sense of her culture and is headed to college this fall.   Shante is going to be a Freshman at The University of Connecticut after being home schooled by her parents.

Her father, Ben, was able to put all of his time into educating his daughter.  He’d retired early and also worked with teachers in the community to ensure that his daughter had access to a high quality education.

What she’s doing is groundbreaking but this is not about vanity,” he said. “It’s about setting the tone for other black and Latino children who will come behind her. They’re always being told they are underachievers. We want to show this can be done.

The Shante family isn’t just shining the light on themselves for personal reasons, they want to make it clear that their daughter is an example for all to see the potential of their own children.  They fully expect their child to serve as a role model to African American and Latino children everywhere.  Well, from first glance, it appears that this young lady can also provide a good example for many adults as well.

This is indeed good news and shows what is natural in black people..I also see that here parents has let this child keep her hair in the natural state, which might also be another reason why this child advanced so quickly, she did not get her brain poisoned by lye and other chemicals found in hair relaxers to tell herself a lie…

    • Peachtree124

how can u tell that she did not get relaxers added to her hair. i am pretty sure michelle obama rocks a relaxer and she is a Harvard graduate. Some kids are born gifted.

Coming from someone who have natural hair and have family members with naturals, I can spot chemically altered hair from a distance…Michelle Obama is like all boughy blacks who believe in order to fit in with europeans, we must try to look like one at all cost to include the hair color changes, colored contacts, and chemically mutilated hair…I also see that Michelle Obama has not chemically altered her daughters’ hair, she just uses a flat iron whenever she feels they need to look “europeans”. Ursula Burns, CEO of Xerox rocks a short natural, did not graduate from an ivy league school and is the only black female running any fortune 100-1000 corporation…Graduating from Harvard or Yale is supposed to make you smarter than the person who graduated from a community college? I seriously doubt that…Most of these ivy league schools (which I also graduate from one) only select certain blacks they want to train to perform a certain function to support white supremacy, evidenced by all these so called black elites who went to these schools and could give a damn about poor blacks…Read “Mis-Education of the Negro’ by Dr Garter Goodwin Woodson, another ivy league graduate (Harvard) who spent 25 years after his graduation to deprogram himself from their training…Dr Woodson had this to say ” ivy league schools destroy more good black brains than cheep whiskey”. I know, I have also had to deprogram myself…

Hair has never determined the potential of a person or not. Nor will it.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shakka-Zulu/1379420279 Shakka Zulu

If your hair does not determine anything about you why keep altering it’s texture? It says a lot about you when you keep trying every six-eight weeks to straighten those rebelling roots to get your hair to confirm to a standard it keeps rejecting…Don’t you think the european knows when they look at you and see you wearing your hair like them? Putting a product with lye in it to tell yourself another lie? You can tell yourself whatever you want that will make you feel good, the fact remains that european makes these product specifically for blacks and other non-whites to use, the same with their bleaching creams sold specifically to people of color…You people are so psychologically damaged you are viewing things from very distorted lens…

hello Shakka Zulu-I’m a graduate of an elite white New England College and an Ivy League University (Doctorate). I never saw the need to embrace European values. There is nothing greater than the knowledge of African and our true history. I found it very easy to excell beyond Euro-Americans. I have loved my true African beauty…all of my life. Yes,my hair is natural. I think, that, the best way,to show others, the way to true self awareness is to model that mind set. We,as  members of the African Diaspora, need to have more of our own businesses. This we enable greater control over the information that is presented to our children. I am an entrepreneur in the child mental health field. It is possible to use an Ivy League education to move our community forward. I do this everyday. The key to this level of success is knowledge of who WE ARE as a cultural group. I teach African history, religion, education, positive behavior, strong Black family values, zero use of pharmaceutical chemicals in mental health care, and many other pro-African values. Yes,our children are brilliant. Many are ready for strong academic guidance,at an early age.
I would not send a child, among Euro-Americans,at a young age for higher education….there are distance learning higher education programs to enable continual learning. I think that is best…..until a child has the emotional maturity to physically attend college.  I like your strong cultural mind set. Please don’t give up on intelligent Ivy league educated Blacks. There are many of us,moving our community forward. There are many steps to full cultural awareness…many Blacks need to be guided towards historical knowledge…before they see the effect of European programming,on our communities. I think that each healthy person of African heritage, has the capacity to re-educate…many who are struggling with positive Black identity perceptions……You are one who educates …thanks for posting your ideas.

please excuse the typing errors…in my long reply to SHAKKA ZULU……also please tell ALL, about the great king./warrior whose name you are using to post your messages…..that,is a great beginning to help Black people see more of our history.
        Thank you again…..SHAKA ZULU

You know not to question a black womans’ hair.  You should use males as an example because that is something you can relate to already.  We already have natural hair- it doesn’t mean we have to get stuck on just a limited amount of looks or styles.  Especially because our hair is the only kind we can do anything we want with it and that is a joy!  Relaxed hair isn’t mutilated- it can actually provide a rest for your hair, provide manageability, flexibility, absorb conditioners deeply and open up time in a busy sister’s life.  Why would you be against hair colors?  And since all human life came from us why should we be limited to only black or brown eyes?  Hey Mr. Natural, are all flowers or birds or fish the same colors??  Do you wear the same dull-colored shirt every day?  Michelle Obama is supporting her husband, the first Black president, not white supremacy.  They are kicking its’ behind every day ruling all over it!  You may be suffering from depression or just not recognize black as beautiful and glorious which is racism  internalized and a personal issue.  Or maybe you are just jealous of black women, which is too common in our men and an indication of seeds of homosexuality, racial separation, degradation, self-destruction, even murder manifesting.  Please get help and please release some colors, variety and joy into your life!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shakka-Zulu/1379420279 Shakka Zulu

Where did you receive your medical training in dermatology to contradict me about chemically mutilated hair? When has altering the original structure of your hair from it’s original form to something chemically similar been good for your hair? Perms and hair color dries out the hair shaft, cause excessive shedding and breakage, dry scalp, damaged hair follicle, and eventually hair loss…Since you believe in imitation of others which is the sincerest form of flattery to the imitated, you’re free to do whatever you want to do with yourself,  but don’t pass off those lies on the general public which is not grounded in facts…Michelle Obama is supporting her husband in the killing of people of color on the Asian and African continents..I have not seen this “African American” president yet tell a white man off, he seems to have no problem killing and incarcerating black and brown, but Israel PM and the Jews can come to the WH, point their fingers in his face and might as well call him boy, what did he do, went to AIPAC bowed down to the jewish lobby while handing over american taxpayers money to them in the form of their annual three billion dollar check…What the hell do I have to be jealous of you or any woman for? I happened to be happily married to an intelligent black person, of the opposite sex with two well adjusted children, so whatever angst you might be feeling, take your crap somewhere else and don’t project it onto me…

Black women like you with all your misplaced anger directed towards black males, instead of the white man who is responsible for the deplorable condition we’ll all, is the reason communication always breakdown into shouting matches between black men and women…Don’t attack the messenger because you don’t like the message..Wearing clothes of different colors is not comparable to wearing different hair colors..I wear a white lab coat to do my rotations, so I don’t know why you’re trying to compare cheese and chalk…That might be one of the reasons why some black women are not taken seriously with all these ridiculous colors they put in their hair looking like peacocks instead of humans…You dress for success, if you’re applying for a residency position in any hospital that I have to make a decision about your acceptance, and you walk in the door looking like a rooster with spiked hair of many colors, you will not be accepted into that doctoral residency program, period…

You have some good things to say in your entry, but use introduce your thoughts to the world with negative comments about/against other good black ambassordors.  You’re no different than the enemy.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shakka-Zulu/1379420279 Shakka Zulu

No more than you and your repetitive schizophrenic bullshit…Speaking about someone being negative who has to make three posts saying the same commentary, try a shrink and get your Prozac prescription, remember to ask for a refillable prescription nut job, you need it…

I find it sad that, in response to a positive story about oneof our precious youth, you use this venue to denigrate the Obama family. Of all the things you could criticize an intelligent Black woman for, you choose the first lady’s hair. I will assume that you love Black people just as I do. But aren’t there a lot of other things you could criticize: violence against Black women, sexual exploitation of Black girls, the misogynist entertainment in music/video and other popular culture? We have so many issues that need to be resolved that I just don’t understand why you chose this positive story to use as a bully pulpit against Michelle Obama. Perhaps you – with your natural hair – are not above a little brainwashing and self hatred yourself….I’m just saying….

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shakka-Zulu/1379420279 Shakka Zulu

Whenever you Obama Kool Aid drinkers don’t get everyone to see things your way, you will always break down your arguments along the lines of the black male verses black female bashing…What I said, was it sends a clear message about your connection to your ethnicity with you wearing your hair in it’s natural state…Everyone black living in the western world, is subjected to brainwashing including you and myself…We just have to make a concerted effort to recognize it, and eradicate it, even when it’s on display in the highest office in the land…What example are you setting when you have young black children and women looking at you and you’re looking like a european negro? Are you saying the occupants in the White House is not to be criticized? Please, this is why black people have not progress, we keep regressing because we have this celebrity deification of people from your preachers to these do nothing celebrities…We always believe in elevating people above us, focusing on the aesthetics and not the substance of what is in front of you…Are you better off for having the Obamas’ in the WH than we were three years ago? Now I’ll hear the usual tired line of give them time, it took eight years to run this country down, it will take more to fix it, blah, blah blah, we will keep making excuses for this black man while he has done nothing to justify the loyalty you have given them…He don’t mind spending one billion dollars trying to kill a black man in Libya, while your black asses is unemployed, homes foreclosed, food stamps cut off, gas and food prices going up, while this black family in the WH is living on the taxpayers dime, flying all over the world, living and eating better that most of us and you people are satisfied with the image of the happy black smiling faces, while grandma has to reduce her medication in half, so it will last the whole month…I have my MD degree making a good living for my black family, I have no illusion about anything, but you people like fairy tales from the tooth fairy, Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, etc…Time to put away the fictions and look at your reality…

        • FaiCole

All this talking but still didn’t answer the question….why use a positive story like this as a venue for bitterness and name calling? Oh, I know. You are just a bitter person and can’t help it!

  • Celia785

If all parents pour themselves into their children instead of their:
jobsboyfriend/girlfriendcarfriendssocial clubstv programsdrugsalcoholwe could have more out-standing children in this world. I find that our children are more often a reflection of ourselves.

  • Aulaitsilk

This is a wonderful story…Prasies for the family…childern are like gardens they reflect the care they are gaven…

  • Lboykin

I am so uplifted by the accomplishments of this young girl.  she is an amazing scholar and her parents are to be applauded for, first recognizing and adcnowledging thier daughter’s talents, and second, for  making the investments in her so that she could excell.

  • Chantaey

Congratulations!!! to Autum Shante from an adult Chantaey who has prayed for that to be the college-age for her own children when they come forth.  However, I would encourage her father to stop worrying about Latinos and continue to encourage his daughter to learn and teach even more about her own African heritage, who are the ancients in the bible, the scientists and mathematicians of Egypt and the world rulers of tomorrow of which she is sure to become.

Go Head little SIS!  I am so proud of you!  I wish more women and men were like your parents and took the time to care and nuture their children instead of producing a bunch of half wits they can’t take care of!

  • Marilyn

Congratulation to Autum!  To he parents:  You’ve done a magnificent job, keep it up; if you have other childen, if not keep doing what you’ve done with your daughter.  She will be one of my 4 year old role model.

It would be great if her dad would give us new parents an outline of what he did and what resources he used for his brilliant daughter.
