Dr. Boyce: Attacking Cornel West Does Not Resolve the Black Political Problem

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, YourBlackWorld.com

If a man is offered a piece of stale bread for dinner, he’s probably not going to want to eat it.  If you were to then say, well, “stale bread is better than horse manure,” this won’t make the stale bread taste any better.  When given the choice between bad food and horrible food, some people would just rather not eat or try to eat someplace else.

But this is what black America is being fed when they are told that they should passionately support the Democrats simply because the Republicans are going to be worse.  The meal is being fed, in part, by elitist liberals like Melissa Harris Perry at Tulane University (formerly Princeton), a darker-skinned staple in the white liberal establishment and fully-indoctrinated member in the Barack Obama fan club.   In a recent article where Perry works diligently to dismiss the political and scholarly relevance of Dr. Cornel West (a huge mistake on her part, since West earned his stripes when Perry was still in high school), she reproduces the same rhetoric that Ivy Leaguers utilize to somehow convince rank-and-file black folks to start seeing things that simply don’t exist.  The same political magic trick was used when the administration got a tiny militia of black Harvard Law Professors to campaign on behalf of Elena Kagan for the Supreme Court in spite of her undeniably racist hiring record – this is how Harvard and Yale folks take care of one another.  Notice that our entire Supreme Court is full of Ivy League graduates; the elite protect their power by manipulating the minds of poor and working class Americans.

Let’s be clear, I am no fan of the disposition against President Obama taken three years ago by Tavis Smiley.  I took Tavis to the carpet for his very personal assault on Obama, which I speculate might explain why he hasn’t ever spoken to me (I could actually care less, to be honest).  I am neither an Obama critic nor am I a super fan.   My agenda is simple:  I want to see leading politicians address massive black unemployment, mass incarceration, rampant racial discrimination in the workplace and the dysfunctional educational systems that are destroying black children and families.  To date, politicians are not standing strong on nearly any of these issues, and given that our surveys show that these problems affect the vast majority of the black community, this should be a concern.

What disturbs me most about the calls I’ve received from the White House and others who somehow believe that we are helping the president by resigning our right to free speech, is that the political types in Washington are more concerned about who gets blamed for the problem than they are about solving the problem.  After Dr. Wilmer Leon and I spoke about the seemingly unproductive relationship between the Obama Administration and the Congressional Black Caucus, most prominent critics of that conversation could only ask, “Why are you blaming Valerie Jarrett for canceling meetings with the CBC?”  Most interesting is that I spoke to Dr. Leon because he could provide an objective opinion on political strategy without any of the selfish agendas that drive those who either reject or support the president outright.  Dr. Leon makes it clear that if you spend all of your time either hating the Obama Administration for no reason or popping champagne bottles because you think we’ve hit Juneteenth Part II, you are not using your political voice in an effective way.

I don’t care if the responsibility for Washington’s political apathy falls on Valerie Jarrett, Barack Obama, the CBC or the pet chicken in the front yard.  All I know is that I just talked the daughter of a formerly incarcerated man who told me that none of his five children graduated from high school because their father was not there to guide them.  I am not sure why any black person on the planet would have any incentive whatsoever to vehemently support an administration with a black male attorney general who has not lifted a finger to reform a justice system that is undeniably racist.

So, perhaps those who are quick to implement the “stop snitching on Obama” policy on Cornel West should stop trying to counter his argument by telling West to remain silent.  Instead, he should be silenced with relevant and meaningful action on the part of the Obama Administration.  Spinning, twisting and reshaping the conversation means nothing when black unemployment continues to rise, mass incarceration decimates our people and our children are not being educated.  You can either get angry at someone for calling you fat, or you can take your fat butt to the gym.  Unfortunately, it’s easier for Washington types and elitist liberals to use political double-speak than it is for them to point to concrete evidence that working and middle class black people (the bulk of whom experience rampant and unregulated discrimination in the workplace) have a reason to be excited about the next election.  Whether they should reject President Obama vs. his Republican counterparts is debatable; but whether they should reject all of Washington is undeniable.

The bottom line is simple:  Giving black folks a choice between stale bread and horse manure is not going to make them want to eat at your restaurant.  It’s time for some political courage and action, instead of asking us to submit to a system that clearly isn’t working.  Whether one agrees with Cornel West or not, he must ultimately be given credit for guiding the conversation back to poor, black and brown people.  Attacking West for pointing out the obvious is nothing more than a counter-productive distraction.

Thank you for an honest and courageous post, Dr. Watkins. This does not only apply to our President; a call to action in the black community is often mistaken for criticism. We need to realize that unless we can acknowledge the issues that exist and trouble our communities, we can not expect a change.

Stop and preach on that a while!

I was very disappointed to read Melissa Harris Perry’s opinions regarding West. I agree that she is totally missing the point. I have a lower opinion of “The Nation” now than I did before.

No Melissa did not miss the point.  What she is saying is that West need to speak the entire truth about what the president has done and not just complain about what he haven’t done.  All that comes out of West mouth is negativity against Obama.  Too much negative will not give you a positive!!!

      • http://twitter.com/BlackBuzzNews Ronald B. Saunders

Vernmm: Melissa did miss the point. I have a lot of respect for Dr Melissa Lacewell Harris Perry and have written a lot of postive things about her in the past regarding a whole litttany of subjects.
Melissa knows full well that the politically regressive first African American President is a product of white supremacy and institutional racism.
Had Barack Obama been an African American candidate who actually sought out to mitigate the negative influences of institutional racism most of white Americans that voted for him would have never have in the first place. Barack Obama was “safe” enough for many white liberals to vote for. He was the Black guy who would never make them feel guilty about their white privilege and American institutional racism that they benefit from. Then candidate Barack Obama was someone they could vote for and subsequently claim they were not racist because they had in fact, voted for an African American candidate. Now that Obama is President, very little has changed except for the fact  he has  become more socially conservative.

        • Alex

          well said Ronald.

          • Jrotced02

I intend to vote for BO if for no other reason, than to see my colleagues have a shRt fit and implode. President Obama has nothing the fear from azzclowns like Wesy and Smiley, because they are a lot less popular than they think they are. People voted for President Obama, then left him for the wolves. When the racist teaparty emerged before Obama had even been sworn in, they gathered like the proverbial lynch mob they were, and Obama was out there all alone fighting them. Not a word from black academia, not a word from the black church, not a word from the Congressional Black Caucus, not a word from black Hollywood, or even black athletes. Now that he’s kicked all their azzes all alone, he’s getting critisized by the people who claimed to be his supporters? Black people didn’t get in this mess AFTER 2009. To think that all they had to do was vote and pray for a miracle belies an attitude that explains our plight today. Over the last three years, the Republicans have been using every trick in the book to disenfranchise people of color…stacking the deck, to sabotage the 2012 elections, by keeping people from voting, or making them ineligible to vote. If you care about yourself and your future, you won’t let them get away with this.

          • Qboro

Jrotced02, I don’t understand your point. People vote for Obama and left him for the wolves? Here’s the real question? Why is Obama constantly throwing black people for the wolves? He is obviously uncomfortable with black people. He calls Kanye a jackass for white approval, and he can’t even defend his wife from racists and bigots in congress and in the press. She’s been called a gorilla many times. Has he called anybody white out? No. You and some of these people on this thread can’t see that he aids the Republicans in disenfranchising “people of color”.

  • Ryancmack

Love you Brother Watkins…I have to disagree with you here. I don’t want Dr. West to stay silent. I want him to be loud and always speak the truth. However, I want him to be loud and speak the WHOLE truth. If your truth only consists of blasting the President about the negative, and remaining silent about the positive things…that isn’t the whole truth. To use your analogy, to continue to blast the President for only the negative and not effectively acknowledge the positive basically is helping those who want us to be sure we will effectively remove  the stale bread from them menu (that we could have turned into a good meal with EFFECTIVE support) and will be served horse crap! Why are we so quiet when the president does good as listed in the article below, but shout from the mountain top when he does bad?

Why don’t he try contacting Obama and telling him what he would like for him to do and see what kind of feedback he gets from the president. Complaining will not get the job done.

    • Alex

I dont see the good he’s done for black people ryan.

      • Ryancmack

If you read the list of accomplishments that I have included in the attached article above you will see plenty of accomplishments.

        • Alex

Ryan, I just read your list and I’m not impressed. Moving soldiers from one battle field to another is a joke. His health care bill is so poorly written, its taylormade for absolute destruction by the republicans. We’re already witnessing big corporations getting waivers, not only showing that the bill has no teeth, but demonstrating outright hypocracy. When I went to your article I did recognized your face from television and I really do appreciate and respect the work you do and how you represent us as a people.(assuming you dont mind me saying you represent our people). Now, my issue is and always will be what has he done to help BLACK PEOPLE. I dont want to here nothing about raising america and we all rise together. I want specific, unattached considerations for BLACK PEOPLE. Our coming to this land was unique, our existance here has been unique and the solutions to our conditions will be unique. Anything less, we will come up short. That COWARD in the white house could be president for the next fifty years and black people would still be facing most of what we face today. Miss me with the mannerisms and charisma and DEMONSTRATE some love for BLACK PEOPLE.

          • Dedove

The President has done for Black People the same as he has done for White People; Move this Nation in a positive direction. It takes ALL Black People to do for Black People!

          • Alex

Yes. Black people must do for black people. Should obama be exempt?

          • Dedove

Of course not, but as President? Nah, he cant even subtly appear to be showing ANY appearance of favoritism!  C’mon y’all!

          • Alex

I agree with Ryancmack.  However, I think you also need to remind folks that President Obama, nor any other President will be responsible or accountable for the “Black Agenda.”  People are criticizing the President because YOU, Tavis, Dr. West, Dr. Dyson, or any other of the like have done anything more than talk to and through the media.  Try talking to Unions during contract negotiations, or champion a class action  lawsuit or something.  The President is not responsible for managing or policing our communities.  That’s why we have Governors, Mayors, Councilpersons.  Let the President be presidential.  Help me get McConnel straight or out of office here in KY.

  • http://profiles.google.com/greeneink Renee Greene

This is where you are dead wrong.

This isn’t about Barack Obama, this is about black people who don’t take of themselves or take care of their own.

First of all, black people don’t have any business being in a position where they are being offered stale bread for dinner. They pull up to the table blinging all over the place with everything else, but when it’s time to eat from the political table at dinner time, they are still begging and waiting for stale bread or horse manure?

Why is this? And don’t give me no shit about Barack Obama, because he didn’t have a daggum thing to do with why black folk have sat on their arses for 40 years BEFORE President Obama got elected and did NOTHING. Didn’t even wolf and bark around white presidents, INCLUDING George Bush, half as much as they are President Obama.

I am not a Democrat, or a member of the Democratic Party and I voted for Barack Obama. Not because he was black, or for any of those other reasons. I voted for him because he was the best thing going out of all of the candidates I looked into — and still is.

I am deeply insulted that you would think that (a) Black folks are so dumb that they are still digging around in a dry gulch waiting for some “Negro” leader to tell them how to vote and why’ (b) Black folk are so ignorant that they can’t understand that President Obama is NOT the President of Black America. We elected him President of the United States of America, and if you weren’t jambing sticks and stones up Bill Clinton’s butt because you were too busy with your tongues up his arse, you need to leave Obama alone, too. You don’t own him just because he is black. You don’t own him any more than you did Bill Clinton.

I understood Clinton. He ran around making a “few black friends” and believing that that was enough to make all the other dumb-arse blacks follow him around like he WAS the first Black President because they are so star and celebrity-struck that they can’t see the stale bread for the horse manure. But I didn’t vote for Clinton because I didn’t believe a word of it. That was the year I went Republican because Clinton was full of horse manure and was using his “See I got a few black friends” stance to cater to folk like you so he could roll the rest of us.

Obama doesn’t have a FAN CLUB – on either side. As President, he doesn’t belong to Black Constituency any more than he belongs to Joel’s Army — and he had to cut a whole good campaign insignia off because of a white nationalist group, as well. He isn’t in a position to take sides, he wasn’t elected to take sides. He was elected to get a job done.

Black folk positioned themselves for FORTY years to only go up when white folks go up and to come down when white folks come down. We had a small window of opportunity to get off those slave ships they put us on years after slavery was OVER and we chose to ride along with them anyway.

If President Obama does not help the WHOLE country, which is what he is doing, then it gets no better for black folks than it did when they were so busy running behind celebrities and “stars” that they didn’t have time to be paying attention to all of the white presidents who were ignoring us and throwing us all in a black trash heap from as far back as the early 1970s. And no, Jimmy Carter wasn’t in love with our arses either,

Wherever AMERICA lands is where black people land, because they.we shot past a 40-year window to have ended all of this being fed stale bread and horse manure because we were so blind to the truth about this country that we didn’t even see President Obama coming. We should have nurtured ourselves and prepared for it and had faith.

He went through what he went through with America’s most blatant murderous racists because WE were not prepared to receive him and did not even have the faith enough to believe it was possible.

If you all don’t start working to get AMERICA back on track, then BLACK AMERICA is going nowhere without it. It is because we CHOSE this day by inaction that went on for so long that it’s too late to take it back. We sat on our arses for the most part and did not vote at all – which cause all of the latent back-door and front door racists IN THE COUNTRY to take over it and own it for so long, that this whole race of people are now looking like the back end of a donkey on BOTH sides, and maybe jackarses LIKE stale bread and horse manure.

But it’s not President Obama that’s feeding it to us.

We’re feeding it to our damned selves.

    AGAIN.

    • Revevh

Thanks Renee you articulated  my thoughts so eloquently, West, Tavis, and
all the rest of the so called, elite blacks, who are going negative on President
Obama, are  just like a bunch of crabs in a barrel. If President Obama, would have
sat down with them or invited them to the White House, you wouldn”t be
hearing all this junk.  They all need to get a life, and go into  the hood and
make a difference in someones life, they’re so haughty, most blacks can’t
      even relate to them.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QOJQQIPMNVFQMGLZMVTNEOJV4I MGJ

Exactly what I have been saying for a while…I call them professional panel sitters.  All they do is sit on panels and tell black folks what they need to do.  They haven’t lead a march on anything.  Tavis and his corporate sponsors never wrote a book calling for George W. Bush or Bill Clinton’s “Accountability.”  Geez they make me sick but they are typical of the “black intellectual scholars” who are always talking loud and doing nothing…

          • http://twitter.com/IamSauerkraut sauerkraut

If telling the truth is what you seek, then you need not drink anything.  Just pay attention.

Back in the Fall of ’88, it was saddening to listen to white conservative law students complain how black HLS students got in only because of Affirmative Action; even sadder now to read West’s comments questioning Obama’s black heritage.

Obama has grown quite a bit since those late days in ’88; Cornel West, not so much.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QOJQQIPMNVFQMGLZMVTNEOJV4I MGJ

You are hooked on nothing except BS…

          • Ronniesaunders

Alex: You have made a lot of noteworthy comments in reference to President Obama. And can I see by your train of thought that  are not hooked on Obamamania or Obama juice.
I am very glad to see Alex that you have used  some semblance of critical thinking skills in your very down to earth analysis of President Obama’s Presidency.
Professor West is one hundred percent correct in his detailed critique of the performance of Barack Obama. Obama can’t make a move unless he consults with his AIPAC advisers in his inner circle in the White House.
Everyone that has a modicum of intelligence Alex understands that Barack Obama doesn’t run a damn thing. Obama is nothing but a puppet to the  oil, gas, and banking cartels and other corporate interest who run these USA.
Alex if this were 1812 Barack Obama would be more than comfortable doing whatever it took to remain in his” Master’s ” house and not outside toiling, day in day out, in the fields with other enslaved African who hated their devil-like master, as well as the wretched institution of chattel slavery. Alex, he is the kind of Guy that Malcolm X might refer to as a ” House Servant.”
Obama has consistently ignored the plight of the masses of African Americans that voted for him, all while working to gain deeper favor with the white financial institutions that contributed to his 745 million dollar campaign war chest. These same Plutocrats will refuel his re-election campign funds in 2012 thus he feels compelled to cater to their every beck and call-to hell with the masses of Black people suffering as a result of institutional racism in America.
Your boy Obama didn’t even consider a Negro for the U.S. Supreme Court. The terrible plight of the Black Famers was on not even on his radar unitl his ass hole Secretary of Agriculture illegally terminated sister Shirley Sherrod and that is the event that brought the plight of the Black Farmers to front and center.
According to the Pew Center report Blacks/African American gave Obama 95.6 per cent of their votes to Obama in 2008. So you tell me Alex what have African Americans received on their investment of 95.6? Sotomayor, Kagan, two non Black appointments to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission,$4 gasoline prices, 19.9 per cent unemployment, slow to react to the BP oil spill, Et Al.
Alex, Obama and the folks around him are counting on the inability of African Americans to read and use critical thinking skills and intellectual curiosity.
Alex when you invest your hard earned capital in a stock or project don’t you expect a return?
And Obama’s girl Valerie Jarrett is nothing but a fair skin  elitist of the third degree who never had any credibility among the folks on the South Side of Chicago.
Just watch how Obama starts to crank of the false hope machine in the Black community with feeble empty rhetoric because he knows that the Negro community can be sold anything.
Alex, don’t waste your vote this time on Obama. Your votes to the Democrats only count on election day.
Democrats and Republicans are all just one big party that serve at the behest of the Plutocrats who are the real movers and shakers in this country.
Yes We Can be duped and tricked. The Negro population has been  duped Alex, but I see you are on the road to recovery.
            Thanks

          • Alex

Hey Ronnie, appreciate your comments. I would like to offer however, that black people are not as easily duped and fooled today as in the past. As it relate to president obama going into the 08 election, black people saw what they recognized to be a GOD fearing, GOD centered man full of goodness and human decency. The intelligence, manner and charisma sealed the deal for us. Our pride went through the roof. We overlooked the early warning signs of his timidness and now we’re getting a sobering view. In some of my earlier post I went overboard in my language discribing him. And to those of us rightly offended, I apologize. The disapointment and frustration has turned to anger. Its a human flaw. That being said, my position on the issues I cited are unchanged. We as a collective must not be so quick to give any black politicion a pass on our business. Dammit, if we are going to participate in the political process and support them, they must deliver PEROID

      • Anonymous

It’s not about drinking the juice.  Right is right and wrong is wrong and in this case Watkins and West are wrong.

    • Essence73T

Thank you Renee Greene!  Finally I can agree with someone on this blog, because it certainly isn’t Boyce Watkins.  I’m disappointed in Cornel West and Tavis Smiley.  We all know that Tavis is still “smarting” about Obama declining his invitation to the “State of the Black Union” Conference.  And of course many of us know that West is his “ace boon” and will support Tavis no matter what which is why he and Al Sharpton had a “knock down drag out” on one of the news channels.  So…Dr. Watkins…..give us a little credit for having the sense to discern who we agree or disagree with.

      • Eric L. Wattree

        You’re right, Essence.

West need to wake up. No respects a puppet – especially, when the puppeteer, Tavis Smiley, has no respect.

West needs to consider the fact that you can’t be dumb these days and expect the people to forget about it. The internet and mass media has a flawless memory, and due to the election of the first Black president, future historians are going to be going over this era with a fine tooth comb. So he needs to think about what jumping through hoops for Tavis Smile is gonna look like to his great grandchildren.  They’re gonna be ashamed of him, because he’s going to go down in history looking like a self-serving idiot, while even with his flaws, Obama is going to go down in his, just based on what he’s already done, as one of the greatest president’s in the history of this country.

Tavis can’t compete with that. Disc jockeys are a dime a dozen.  So Tavis needs to get over it – and West needs to wake up.

        • Alex

          Eric, he’ll just go down.

      • Alex

Question. Why wouldn’t the president go to a conference where the concerns of black people is on the table. He dont have a problem going to visit the jews and discussing their concerns. He’s about to go to work on behalf of the mexicans. Give me a break! Black people are waking up and that slick nigga has a snowballs chance in hell of being re-elected. And for those of you who want to play intellectual and defend him and then critisize those who point out the Factual Truth about him, GO TO HELL

He didn’t go to the conference because he’d already made a campaign commitment long before the conference. Michelle offered to go in his place but Tavis said no, it’s Barack or no one so no one showed up. Tavis acted like then candidate Barack Obama should have canceled his commitment to another group and it doesn’t matter who that group was, to attend the State of the Black Union. In my opinion, that was rude of Tavis to expect someone to break a commitment.

          • Jean T

I agree with you. Tavis, my opinion, and now unfortunately
Dr. West, seem to be angry and jealous and believe they
should be his “buds” because they are black.  They disrespect him as President.  In fact, Who, in this world is not aware of the Black Condition in this country.

He has only been President for 2 years and already the
            “Crabs” are pulling him down

          • Alex

Would you consider that the same one who set obama’s “PRIOR COMMITMENT” (if you believe that) is the same one who sent him off to ireland to find his white roots at the very hour we discuss his commitment to BLACK people?

          • Bem1018

Why should’nt he go and find his white roots? He is half white you know.DAH!!!!!!!

        • Dedove

Sounds like vitriol to me.Dont take being slick, personal.  Its a survival skill!

        • Jean T

          You are a Royal IDIOT

            YO MAMA!  CRACKER.

          • Jean T

That could only be you then. Niether a cracker or a “nigga”

        • Bem1018

Then perhaps Alex you go vote for Sarah Palin or Newt Gringrich,Romney or maybe the republicans new house negro Herman Cain in 2012 and see what results occur if one of those clown get elected, and then get back to us and enlighten us.But in the meantime be quiet and stay out of grown folks conversations.

      • Mikeajeff

If anyone needs to proof that Cornell West is full of it, please look up the video where Sista Souljah take him to task for saying that, “Blacks should just settle for the Democrats have to offer.”

I wonder if Boyce is aware of that comment.

@google-9360c1411094e2efbf822a94a910a8e5:disqus Keep it up! White people love it when ‘blacks’ attack themselves. Especially the most racist right-wing types. Also the most convoluted of those among us who cannot connect the dots that help to understand what we are up against, what got us this screwed up, and why we will never see our way out of this madness as a people.

Look at other countries to see how they fared after European Anglo-Elite rule. If you can see it in a realist way and understand what happened to them you will see a thread running through the stories that show conquest, religious, and psychologically manipulation laced with massacre and genocide. You might be able to see the people driven to poverty, a reduction in population, and a noted belief change to Christian or Catholicism. Everywhere you look you will see leaders of countries either murdered and replaced or made to defer their economic stability to these Anglo-Elite and getting rich in the process.

As far as Africans or African-Americans are concerned. We don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell correcting the wrongs that have been done or continue to be done to us. If Haiti’s President Aristide, or Libya’s Qaddafi cannot withstand the onslaught of Anglo-Elite power, we don’t have a chance as a people who are divided, without a culture, without our own language, without a strong country to back us. (We were stripped of all of those things long ago).

If our so-called leaders are unable to band together and agree on helping us pull out of the mire, we will be held back for decades to come. If our individual citizens are so misguided, confused, and unenlightened in so many ways, we can not support each other, or our leaders. If the ‘Americanized’ brand of hate runs through our blood in such a broad rush (and it does). We are doomed as we were  from the start. Just as our predecessors, and just as our now separated and destroyed families in Africa.
The way to truly understand our predicament is to ask why this, or why that, then begin research in earnest . You’ll find a much different story than the one you’ve adjusted yourself to. I could suggest books if you’d like, but somehow I see that your mind is fully made up.

      • Alex

Dont sell us so short WizardG. We know more about america than Gadafi or Aristide could ever know. We know her from the inside. Our collective fear of being truly independent of white people is the only hinderance.

YES, YES, YES…PREACH…time for the crabs in the barrel to put up or shut the hell up…nobody is holding us down except ourselves…we wouldn’t have crazy republicans in charge of anything if folks had gotten off their lazy behinds and voted.

Also, STOP looking for a government handout and look to each other for help and support…other minorities do it and that is one of the reasons they can come into our communities and own businesses and take that money right out of that community and invest nothing in that community…

Start thinkng for your self… and spewing trash…wake up…..It is not the fault of a political party…. its the ignorance of a race….

    • Leart2

Your Comments was long and critical of the Black Community, most are diserving.  However, what makes your comment lack value is the lack of solutions.  It’s true targeted Voting is a problem, but not necessarily a solution to specific problems.  Blacks have problems with out of wedlock births, crime, and drugs that have been imbedded in the culture.  Just these three factors make many Blacks unemployable.  Plus many Blacks are not indipendenly productive on their own, consequently they employ very few of their own.  In your comment you didn’t mention anything about the unemployment of Blacks continueing to rise while all other ethnic/racial groups drop. continue to drop.

      • Yepme2

“Blacks have problems with out of wedlock births, crime, and drugs that have been imbedded in the culture.  Just these three factors make many Blacks unemployable.”

You are identifying symptoms, the real problem, “We are not rendering the right decisions,”  All results of human interaction is related to decisions.  Those on top, stand on.  Those at the bottom are stood on.  The top render decisions to stay on top, those at the bottom, render decisions to stay at the bottom.

When the mind is clogged with BS, the concept of reality is delusional and decisions are relevant to the identification process.  Many people achieve their goals whether they had one parent or no parents.  It is how the mind is developed and assuredly requires a mind filter to screen out the BS that is the essence of life.

        • Inquisitive

I like how you and think and we think alike in regards to the mind and personal/universal reality. It is my mission in life to spread this message as far as I can. It all starts in the mind. It is easy to get sidetracked and distracted when the mind IS cluttered by BS and everyday problems and worries; BUT we must free (clear) our minds or we shall never be free. Period. Well, that is how I see it. Thank you Yepme2 for your comments.

          • Yepme2

Thank you for recognizing the real problem and I appreciate your response.  I wrote a book, I would like to send you, free of charge, the book is comprised of provocative mind stimulation, a different perspective on traditional thoughts, the book: “It’s The Mind Dummy”

It is comforting to know, I am not alone on a mind island, even though my mind is strong enough to dea with it.

There are many issue of resolve we can relate to and I appreciate an opportunity to further communication with you.

          • Alex

I would like a copy of your book as well brother. You certainly make a case.

      Renee Greene,
Thank you for your comments. I don’t know why Drs. Watkins, West and Tavis think the president is responsible for “saving” Black America. It is our responsibility. I supported the president before and I’ll continue to support him. And I’ve said it before, President Obama doesn’t open one door for me. The thing we have to continue to do is call Watkins, West and Tavis out when they come up with these lame excuses.

    • Qboro

I totally agree with you regarding Bill Clinton. Black people fell in love with him for no apparent reason. I don’t agree with you saying that blacks have been asleep for 40 years though. Were you around when the community and black leadership gave Reagan hell? Obama is not the only president to be challenged by the community. Do blacks have to start doing for self, of course but to totally give Obama a pass for ignoring black legislators is off also. Especially when he hasn’t ignored anyone else. You can’t have it both ways. You said that blacks aren’t taking care of themselves then you say that Obama shouldn’t be criticized. Isn’t Obama black? Why is he ignoring black people? I don’t want to hear that he’s the president of everybody shit either. If Joe Lieberman was elected president, he would be looking out for jews no matter what anybody says.

      • Jean T

If the Black Culture was more like the Jews,ie totally supportive of each other, no matter what,  instead of focusing on trying to “mainstream” for the past 200 plus WE would not need one man to change things as it would not be a problem.  After all, we are the only group of people in this country who came here kicking and screaming, We did not ask to come,
and the others know that.  The jews never let the world forget the holocaust, some of us cannot even read or hear about slavery. where was Dr. West, Dr. Boykin and Smiley when the congress ignored that recently when they read the constitution and what say they about the books being changed now to ignore the reality of our struggle in this country.  Dr. West, wake up! there are no “free black men” yet.  Based on  his and the aforementioned “brothers”(and repubs) there may never be.

        Wake up!

      • Yepme2

You are correct on Clinton, but there was a reason, it’s called syndrome.  You are correct we have not ben asleep for (40) years, although I believe it would be bwtter to have been asleep, then we could wake up.  You are correct about doing for ourselves, by organizing with economic strategy. Anyone rendering decisions affecting the population should be criticized.

You are 100% correct with Lieberman analogy.  Other thoughts, we refuse to deal with is the reality of mathematical appreciation.  I was born in a world of gambling, where families survived from gambling and related revenue generating endeavors.  I witnessed the payoff in the thirties and learned all through life that in a capitalistic society, money is power when applied efficiently.

Mathematically the reality is there for any rational thinker to assess.  You do not count on the vote, it is crooked and controlled, you buy politicians, they are for sale.  Ask yourself, “Which organized group has the most influence over the politicians and why?”  They buy, they support the politician that will adhere to their concerns.  Who do we support with our money?  The church!  Billions of dollars spent supporting voices preparing us for death and very little on decisions affecting our survival concerns.

Acceptiing the slave master’s religion is a syndrome and mind boggling.
If you do not pay your taxes, you can go to jail (Wesley Snipes) or have your property confiscated and assets frozen for penalty reasons.  The preacher can keep what they get without countability, that is a partnership.

If we keeping responding to reality the way we are, there will never be any significant change.  Another observation, the Asian society is not that invovled in Politics other than the buy side, they know something we are ignoring.

        • Alex

Very valid points made here.   Question. Are we as a people prepared to commit ourselves to a path of moral coruption and the attending spiritual consequences?

          • Yepme2

Morality is a mind concept expressed in the written and spoken word, think about it. BS is generated in the mind and expressed in the written and spoken word.  The universe is a mathematical principled system of evolving energy, functioning perpetually with infinite results. There are no rules of morality, only principles of appication and results.

Money is a corrupt system of the mind developed to control and manipulate people.  No other life form on the planet depend on money for survival.  To participate in any form of money exchange is supporting a corrupt system.

What are spiritual consequences, capitulating to the slave master’s religion.  The religion of universal reality is stimulation and reaction, there are no moral consequences, except in the mind of those willing to embrace the thought.  When a hurricane, earthquake, sunami or any of nature’s consequences is experienced, there is no selectivity, no discrimination, who or whatever is in the path of the event, pay the price, young or old, the sick, women, children, matters not.  Of all the living species, only the human entity has moral parameters.

Are we prepared to commit ourselves?  No, but it doesn’t mean we should not start.

I appreciate your concern and will share my attention in a direction of progressive expectations.

A pleasure exchanging thoughts with you.

    • Bem1018

Thanks Renee Green! You said a mouthfull.Screw Cornel West.

  • Eric L. Wattree

No one is attacking West simply because he’s attacking Obama.  I criticize Obama all the time, just as I reserved the right to criticize his White predecessors.  The reason that West leave a bad taste in my mouth is because he lacks credibility, and he’s clearly one of those brothers who likes to shoot off his mouth to get personal publicity rather than any genuine concern for the Black community.  We’ve had enough of that demagoguery.

If West gave one damn about the Black community, or the negative impact of the corporatists thereto,  he would be seriously considering the ramifications of his association with Tavis Smiley, the biggest corporate shill in the Black community.

While I have some issues with Obama, as I do with every politician I’ve ever known, I fully understand that I can’t lay all of our problems at his feet. Yes, we do have a racist penal system, but what are we doing as Black parents to help our kids avoid its snare?  And yes, we have high unemployment, but what are we doing to help our youth to become employed?  You cannot into a job interview talking about “yo.”  In addition, Black people are the second largest consumer group in America.  Why do we have to wait for someone else to create our jobs? We can create our own jobs if we start thinking instead of whining about what Obama ain’t doing from ivory towers.

And yes, we do have a poor educational system in the Black community, but man, knowledge is free.  What are we doing to promote the love of knowledge in our community?  And what are we doing to see to it that bratty kids are not going to school being so disruptive that the kids who are trying to learn can’t concentrate?

If West was indeed an intellectual, or even a person of average intelligence who was simply telling us what we want to hear in order to promote his own interest, he’d be focusing on these issues instead of running around trying rap albums and whining about what Obama’s not doing.

Personally, I’ve had more than enough of this dude, and all the others of his ilk.  If I hear West say, “my brother” one more time I’m gonna throw up.

    • Walter Simtec Simmons

I sincerely believe that we should spend our precious time, energy and wisdom on making things better in terms of communicating to each other with peace and love. Point out the areas where improvement can be achieved. We all carry a degree of baggage that could stand some enlightenment. I believe a president can do so only so much under our present political system and President Obama can not be held responsible for changing this system singled hand-idly. We need to use the positive approach by dispelling the many American myths that are confusing the general public. Support will come if the public understands the nature of the laws necessary for justice and equality. Come on Dr. West, Dr. Boyce and President Obama, get your act together. Let’s work together in peace and solve these challenges. It can be done and you guys can do it and there is not better time than NOW!.

    • Alex

Eric, I only have a problem when west refers to whites and jews as his brothers. As far as black people creating jobs and businesses for themselves, youre’right. However, we should not be so naive to think that black people attempting to pool and produce meaningful and consequential institutions to raise the masses of black people would not be met with strong opposition from the AMERICAN GOVERNMENT and her institutions, as well as the power brokering JEW that pay black people their salaries. Its not a NEW idea Eric.

      • Ronniesaunders

Alex: During the height of the Civil Rights Movement/ Black Liberation Movement Afro-Americans who were aware of their Blackness always greeted each other with the term brother or sister. It was one the way’s of trying to recapture that lost psychic that been so damage do to 400 years of individual and institutional racism.
Alex you are factually correct when you say that the powers to be would attempt to destroy any meaninful movement to control our institutions.
(The Marcus Garvey Movement). Brother Garvey was brought up on bogus charges relative to taxes in an effort to destroy his movement. Garvey had the largest following ever among people of Black African Heritage in the USA.
Keep up your good work Alex.. I think that MGJ is a racist white man. What enlightened Black person would use that little stupid looking picture with a smiling face that is suppose to be Black.
Alex, you think old MGJ designed that insulting smiling Buck Tooth Indian on the cap of the Cleveland Indians?
Keep up your good work and Power To The People

    @ Renee Green & Erick L. Wattree,

You both are right on point!

Black folk have sat around far too long and allowed crap to happen to them, because too many of us are waiting around for someone to give us our 40 acres and a mule!

Mr. Obama is not perfect!  He is not GOD! He is the President for ALL of the people of the United States.

Once again, we waste out time pointing fingers at this president instead of being on our way towards something positive.

    Black folk WAKE UP!

No one is going to give you anything . Educate yourself, prepare yourself, stop waiting on a check from “someone”.  If we do not take charge of us, we will be on the same bottom rung as always. Hispanics and others are moving swifly ahead of us because they understand what they must do to advance as a people.

Cornel West needs to sit down!  All that jumping around looking like a a clown, screaming and yelling does nothing for us. That type of behavior is over!

    Black folks, please WAKE UP!

I am very disappointed at Obama’s lack of concern for Blacks, especially since he seems to lean toward the illlegals who are backrupting our nation.
What burns me about the illegals is that with each defiant act of breaking our laws, the U.S. rewards them.  They refuse to integrate and learn the language, so American hires bilingual workers throughout our working society, we put bilingual education in our schools, because they refuse to teach theri children English before entering schools ( thus making them behind at least 4 years, they produce false social security numbers to enter our colleges and then the government wants to give them the dream act, for breaking the law yet again. Illegals export money back home without a tariff or tax, instead of paying for their hospital bills or whatever else they get for free.  Obama calls for sacrifice, I’m retired and have not gotten a cost of living increase in two years, plus my medicare perminuims have gone up. This sacrifice went into effect immediately.  When are the illegals going to pay or sacrifice? When are corporate companies have their subsidies cut, like Walmart, and Oil companies.  America is producing more and more Poor people, as they undereducate, send our jobs overseas, cut jobs, allow illegals to overpopulate our country and make the working class pay for their definace. Then our government wants to cut entiltements. I say stop creating a class of poor, then refuse to  support them.  GTet out of these wars and protect our borders. Black’s  human rights are being violated.Obama has  turned a blind eye to Blacks.

    • Jean T

I agree with most of what you have said, however, let’s identify a way/the protocol to tell him that.

  • Anonymous

The way I see it, we currently have only two major political parties.   And although neither is perfect, the Democrats are significantly better than the Republican party in their treatment of minorities.   You may offer some valid criticism of Barack Obama but the alternative , which you fail to identify, is much worse.   Like the white folk who are so quick to criticize Obama for failing to deliver on some promises (promises that they fought diligently to prevent him from keeping), you too expect too much too soon, without providing him any support to get the job done.   I have worked at many a corporate job in positions previously held by white men who screwed up the work.  Yet folk (both white and black) expected me to clean it all up on day 2.

Obama has been in office a little over two years.   No other president has ever faced as many different MAJOR problems, at once or an opposition party determined to thwart him at every opportunity, and ‘supporters’ who expect him to work miracles overnight.  Give the man a break !

Remember, he signed up to be President of ALL the people, not just the African Americans who make up approximately 13% of the population.  I am sure that Hispanics, Native American Indians, poor people, Mexicans, Gays, women and various other splinter groups all have interests  that they feel have not been adequately addressed yet either.   But instead of criticizing, why don’t we focus on what WE can do to HELP the President.

God knows he needs all the help he can get.  If you are starving and have no food at all, stale bread can taste pretty good.

    • Alex

diannkirby, you sound like a spiritual person and thats great. I believe in prayer, and I enjoy going to prayer meetings. However, this is a BEAR meeting and thats what we need in the president.

You are correct.  I don’t know you, only what you seem to espouse to. You sound like an intelligent person and I will read your poem and article. However I believe you are very wrong about the President and so it may be a problem when someone with your seeming intelligence is able to reach out to some who may be influenced by your opinions.  That is also true of Dr. West whom I have admired.

I think the problem with illegals has been exaggerated by Fox news PURPOSELY to make Obama look bad….I think now that Fox has come out and admitted that their network is, in fact, an arm of the republican party…they are much more vicious and hate-filled than I have ever seen them be…. They are so much more nasty than I remember..it’s shocking.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_33ER4XXGJ7NMX7X3IR63UPTOLI George E., Jr.R

I HAVE HEARD AND READ DR. WEST’S VIEWS ON THE POLITICAL PROBLEMS WE FACE AND I AGREE WITH HIM FOR THE MOST PART AND PRESIDENT OBAMA
PROBABLY DOES AS WELL!  DR. WEST IS AN INTELLECTUAL AS IS PRESIDENT OBAMA. PRESIDENT OBAMA IS ALSO A POLITICIAN AND DR. WEST IS
NOT!  PRESIDENT OBAMA ACCORDINGLY KNOWS THAT HE HAS TO PICK  HIS
TIMES TO EFFECTIVELY DEAL WITH THESE ISSUES, OR HE WILL NOT GET A SECOND TERM, AND THEREBY ENOUGHT TIME TO DO THE SAME. THEREFORE,
DR. BOYCE, CORNEL WEST PUBLICLY ATTACKING THE PRESIDENT LIKEWISE DOES NOT RESOLVE THE BLACK POLICITAL PROBLEM! PERHAPS WE WOULD ALL BE BETTER SERVED IF THE TWO INTELLECTUALS WOULD MEET AND PRESIDENT
OBAMA MADE DR. WEST AWARE OF HIS POLITICAL STRATEGY!  IF YOU EXAMINE THOSE SUCCESSES HE HAS HAD, YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND THAT A LOT OF STRATEGIZING HAD TO TAKE PLACE IN ORDER TO ACCOMPLISH THE SAME.
THERE IS AN OLD SAYING THAT THE WORLD WASN’T MADE IN A DAY; LIKEWISE
WE ALL INCLUDING DR. WEST NEED TO EXERCISE SOME PATIENCE WHEN
LOOKING FOR SOME RESOLVE TO THE BLACK POLITICAL PROBLEMS WE FACE.
GIVEN TIME, JUST LIKE THE WHOLE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT, WE SHALL
OVERCOME!  IF YOU RECALL ALL OF THESE ACCOMPLISHMENTS TOOK SOME TIME AND IT IS OBVIOUS THAT NOT ALL HAVE BEEN REALIZED OR RESOLVED SOME FORTY YEARS LATER!  PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE, AND LIKEWISE GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE THAT WAIT!!

    • Alex

George, white folks had their purpose for installing obama as president. And you shouldn’t think for one minute that they had not considered our likely response to his neglect of our issues during his first term as president. They are fully aware that our disappointment, disbelief and anger would become known publicly and that it could potentially affect the president and his thinking towards black people and our condition. After being forced to recognize his neglect, the GOD in him might cause him to do right by his people. Believe me. ITS NOW OR NEVER.

What do you expect Obama to do for Blacks?  Give them all forty acres and a mule?

        • Alex

400 acres and a John Deere would be a good start.

          • Dedove

We even gotta fight for THAT promise.  WE, not the President.

  • http://personalityofmeh.blogspot.com/ kenda

Of course we should critique and pressure the president into doing what’s best for our communities, but Cornell West was out of line. There’s no need for personal attacks, and I don’t care about his personal grievances with the president. West’s legitimate disagreements are overshadowed by his decision to attack the president’s identity.

Dr Boyce are you a Prof or exProf of Syracuse ? Did you know that Dr Melissa Harris-Perry has two Doctorate Degrees .If you are aware then why the disrespect ? Sounds a bit sexist to me .At what stage would she be qualified to critcise Dr West ? You can critcise Tavis who earned his stripes while you are looking for yours .Guess you are the stripe master .Thought that you , Dr West(Harvard,Princeton) are all Ivy leaguers .How did Dr Melissa get tagged with the elitist title . Iworked with youth in the hood for over thity years trust me you need to speak to them with more intelligence than stale bread &  horse manure.I disagree with a lot of what you say however it is your opinion ,that does not make it fact .Long after Pres Obama is no longer in office History will decide .Peace & remember that because one make a lot of noise does not mean that he/she has much to  contribute .Be humble ,do not listen too much to your own echo chamber .

Dr. Boyce, you are the true “fair and balance” and may god bless you for that brother. However, this is not the time for divided loyalty. It is abundantly clear that obama, with all of his intelligence and charisma, does not have the COURAGE needed to represent black people in the presence of whites. We watched as he turned his back on his black pastor of twenty years, who’d done nothing more than state some TRUTHS about america. He publicly called our troubled young brother Kanye a JACK ASS before the world (seeking a thataboy) from white folks. He couldn’t even defend the black college professor from that rasict, disrespecting cop without bowing down in some bullshit beer summit He is a GENUINE HOUSE NIGGA and the trust and hope we placed in him has been and will continue to be wasted. He’s a COWARD. And his work outside of america is no better. He has that SLICK,SLIMY SKUNK bill clinton in charge of Haiti. Give me a break! That SKUNK has always been a hinderance to Haiti. And isn’t this the same SKUNK that started this questioning about his citizenship. COWARD I tell you, COWARD. The Egyptians seeking justice rose up against mubarak. Then hillary “queen of the jews” and others, bumrushed him and told him that if he didn’t save mubarak he’d better remove Gadafi from Libya, a man who has been a friend INDEEDS to Black Africa and Black people all over the world. Today, that nigga’s hands drips the BLOOD of inocent people just as all american presidents before him. Our Absolute Freedom and Absolute Justice will come only when we publicly demonstrate Absolute UNITY and not one second before.

      “that nigga”???? “GENUINE HOUSE NIGGA”

Your assault is hateful and pitiful

      • Alex

Iv’e sinced learned you are not the cracker I suspected. And I did offer an apology for the foul language directed at obama. However my position on his actions are unchanged.

Sometimes I wonder about you Dr. Watkins…Cornel West and Tavis need to go somewhere and shut the hell up.  What are THEY doing to help create jobs in our communities?  They are nothing more than professional panel sitters who espouse their “black, elitist intellect” for all to see.

Newsflash to jungle fever sufferer Cornel West:  STOP throwing around the words “brother and sister” so loosely…everybody is not your brother or sister…

What did you mean with the jungle fever sufferer Cornel West statement?

I have read most of Ms.Greene’s explosive comment. It is off balance in many ways. We as ‘black’ people are not unified as a people for obvious reasons. We all chose Obama for whatever reasons we had in our personal registers. We are not sitting at any tables because we are still uninvited to ‘White’ house tables! Our so-called leaders are fighting each other and becoming ever more divisive. We have a very confused and very unstable collective of ‘black’ people in this country because we have been destroyed as a people long ago. Our scholars are divided according to whatever their main interests are and what true social/world knowledge they posses, or do not posses.

Dr. West is a good man. His concerns are pure and he is clearly speaking on behalf of those who have no-one’s ear. As I said before we are a divided people, and so are our leaders.
President Obama is a politician, so unlike our good leaders, such as Dr. Boyce, Dr. West, and Tavis Smiley etc., Mr. Obama is sanctioned by a totally different group who’s standards have nothing to do with the welfare of ‘blacks’.
Everyone fails to understand who is truly in power in this country and what their desires concern. Everyone fails to see the obvious reasons why we as ‘black’ people are so divided and why Obama’s cabinet cannot, and will not, do nothing to better our position, and well being as a people in this country. The country belongs to the ‘Anglo-Elite’, They pick and choose who does what, and how it is done. To that “special” group of people, we are still as much the product of slavery as ever. We are to be kept at a certain level as a people, manipulated, controlled psychologically,  socially, and used, as the Anglo-Elite see fit.
Obama was chosen by them as their special tool. He is nurtured and protected by them, and just as all of government, is controlled by them.

Logically it should be obvious to the most scholarly and learned that everything occurring in our country and our world is due to constant manipulation by the same people who have been conquering countries and peoples for ages. It should be obvious, but some want to believe in things that are superficial so badly that they refuse to see the obvious.
The African-Americans in this country can only hope that someday our descendants will have true freedom and justice, but judging the way the Anglo-Elite are pillaging our world, our hopes and dreams will not be realized.

We as ‘black’ people only seek to receive equal and just treatment in this country and hope for the same across the African diaspora, but looking at our predicament in a logical fashion we should understand what is causing not only our problems, but that of the whole world. We should understand that our government has never been ‘of,by, and for the people’ and it (It being the Anglo-power-Elite), certainly still looks down on ‘blacks’ and other ‘people of color’ as second class citizens, and that there has always been those of us chosen to serve the elite in higher capacity, and therefore we shall always be caught up in this unjust way of life a divided, confused, and abused peoples. Some of us will never understand and some will always be in denial. Yet we are not alone. Mainstream society as a whole doesn’t get it either, which is why it is possible to keep us on in this constant loop of disaster as the elite feed off the carcass of the world’s helpless and unaware.

Keep watching as you’ll see those with enough power and influence to make changes for the better are attacked in one way or another. No one will be allowed to get between the Anglo-Elite and their power/wealth! Believe it or not!

    • Alex

WizardG, I agree with everything you said except the part about us not coming together. I believe that truth and understanding has been heralded amongst black people for a considerable period of time and it has resonated with many of us. I believe we are absolutly coming together. Is it a perfect union? Not yet. but we’re heading there. What other reason would this vicious cracker find cause to embarass himself before his WHITE brethern in europe by putting a black man in the WHITE house. It hurt him in his heart to do so. Surely, them skunks see the storm clouds gathering and they know there is no silver lining for them. Deception is there only option.

  • Monte

Nice article. But again, we are going back to trying to put everything on president Obama. I agree with Renee Greene’s nicely written opinion. I am a huge fan you Dr. Watkins but sometimes, these “President Obama has to do this for black folks ” gets old.

  • Anonymous

As usual black folks are “between a rock and a hard place”. The reason why our “slavery” continues in America is due to the fact a large majority of white people are just plain crazy and it falls to US time after time to bail America out The current 2012 presidential situation is a textbook example of what I am talking about. Obama has done less for black folks than any of the previous white presidents. That is a fact! Obama knows this and as long as he is up in the polls he will continue to ifnore the needs of black folks, just like he and Eric Holder have shown NO INTEREST in what is happening to black folks up in Benton Harbor Michigan. Obama has siezed on Roosevelt’s famous political command to A. Phillip Randolph during their meeting at the White House. In regards to his administration doing anything for black folks in America he said, “go out and make me do it!” So Obama’s messqge to West, Watkins, or any other black spokesperson is , “go out and make me do it!”  Now to Obamma’s political opposition… these people simply WANT TO DESTROY AMERICA..

After decades of being run by the best “Con Men” in America, the Republican Party has now been taken over by the LIBERTARIAN Party. American white folks still believe deeply in the flip side of  “white priviledge” which is their long cherished belief that all white people will eventually “DO THE RIGHT THING”. This is why they are so confused about the fanacticism of the Libertarian/Republicans currently controlling the House of Representatives. If the Libertarian/Republicans were to win the Congress and the White House in 2012, they would repeal  every Congressional act benefiting African Americans that has become Federal law since the Civil War. By repeal I mean that they will pass new legislation that would have the effect of pre-emptying or nullifying existing legislation. Also they would completely defund and desolve the Federal government itself. Think that these guys won’t do it? Think again. Their ideology calls for NO GOVERNMENT AT ALL IN AMERICA. Keep your eye in the current Speaker of the House if you think that these people are not fanatics. So my question to Mr. West and other flaming purists like him, ” which would you prefer, the rock or the hard place?”

    • Alex

Parvenu, first  I dont believe that black people are only 13% of america. Thats a lie whitey tells to keep black people feeling vunerable and fearful as we all look down the road at this oncoming race war. I believe our numbers are closer to 20% or higher. The black man is so potent he just looks at the sister and she gets pregnant. Thats what the incarcerations is all about. The birth rate of black people. And I couldn’t give a dam about the speaker of the house or any of those crackers delusional enough to believe that they can take legislation back to 1900 and survive. They MIght out number us 3 to 1. Those are good odds. We’re well able to handle this. Bring it on Boehner.

      • Anonymous

Sorry Alex, don’t know where you got that bogus 13% population figure from. I didn’t write it. Please reread my comments. The main theme of my comment is that the country is in the greatest danger than it has ever been, including World War II. This danger is from within in the form of the ideology of the LIBERTARIAN/REPUBLICANS. These people are no longer on the political fring; they are currently sitting in Congress working resolutely on legislation designed to effectively DESTROY THE ENTIRE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT. Alex my challenge to you is to read up on the LIBERTARIAN Party, their history and their ideology. It will open your eyes. These people are fanatics and will not listen to anyone who does not endorse their ideology. This is an overwhelming fact that unfortunately John Boehner is struggling to bring under some form of reasonable political control within the Republican caucus.  Today’s news reported that Boehner is in a state of desperation having lost all control over those new 65 House Libertarian/Republicans.

health care, education, justice system, discrimination in the workplace, but you don’t mention the cause of all of this – white supremacy/racism. “If you do not understand white supremacy/racism, what it is and how it works, then everything else you do understand will only confuse you.” Neely Fuller Jr.

    • Alex

      Well said Neely.

    • AntBee

I think anyone with a tad of intelligence understands white supremacy/racism, however until black folk start to take advantage of the opportunities we have right here in America, just like other races do, and until we/masses educate ourselves, and until black folks stop falling into the trap/hands of those who want to see us locked up by NOT doing crimes that we know will lock us up, and by participating in the political system, we will never, ever,  get ahead, and we will never be respected as a people! Others do not have respect for us when they see us not doing anything to better our plight! If we do not want to participate in this system, or live in the USA because it is so racist, then we have the choice to leave here and find our utopia someplace else! But, until some of us change our mentality, and take those chains off our necks (that we willingly put there), it will make no matter where you go on this planet because your mind set is not free. We need to stop placing blame for ALL of our issues and problems on others. We need to stop expecting others to do for us, or give us something! We need to stop giving lip service and get up and do something! This President or no other President will be able to do anything for us until we do something for ourselves!!! Thank GOD it is not ALL black folk with this backwards mind set. Look at it this way. If in all these years we are still talking about the same problems and issues, and no one/president/black leader/preacher,  or whomever has “led us to the promise land”, then we must be doing something wrong, or we are not doing something!!!  When will we realize that we need to change something? Do something? How in hell can a Mexican come here that speaks no English, but will work at ANY legal job along with his/her family, and has ALL of their children in schools absorbing knowledge likes a sponge, and then living 2-4 families in one place, and then own their own properties, businesses, and some black folk are still sitting around talking about how the Mexicans have taken jobs from them. BTW, these are some of the same black folk who was still sitting around BEFORE the Mexicans got here! Black folk WAKE UP!!

JUDGMENT DAY THE END OF THE WORLD IS ALMOST HERE!
HOLY GOD WILL BRING JUDGMENT DAY ON
MAY 21, 2011JUDGMENT DAY is feared by the world and is the day that God will destroy the world because of the sins of mankind. The world is correct in believing that Judgment Day will come. The Bible gives us the correct and accurate information about that Day.The Bible is the Holy Book written by Holy God who is the Creator of this beautiful world. The Holy Bible is without question a very ancient book, having been completed about 1,900 years ago. In its original languages (mostly Hebrew and Greek) it has never been changed, and each and every word in the original languages is from the mouth of God. The Bible is divided into two parts (the Old Testament and the New Testament), with each part divided into many books. Each book is divided into chapters, and each chapter is divided into verses. One of the books is named Second Timothy (2 Timothy). In Chapter 3, verse 16 (2 Timothy 3:16) of this book Holy God tells us:All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. In Jeremiah 36:1-4 God gives an example of how the Bible was written:And it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, that this word came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spake unto thee, from the days of Josiah, even unto this day. It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them; that they may return every man from his evil way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin. Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah: and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD, which He had spoken unto him, upon a roll of a book [the roll of the book is the Bible].Holy God is far, far greater than our human minds can even begin to explain or understand. In Genesis 1:1 God declares:In the beginning God created the heaven and the earthThe Holy Bible is a book written to us so that we can know that Holy God created this beautiful universe, including all of its plants and animals, birds and sea creatures, and mankind who was created to rule this earth. Indeed there is no being of any kind that can compare with Holy God, who simply by speaking brought every kind of plant, animal, sea creature, and mankind, sun, stars, etc., into existence. For example, Holy God tells us in His Holy Bible in Genesis 1:24-26:And God said, let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God said, Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. The people of the earth, which we call mankind, were created to rule over this earth. God gave laws by which we can live as happily and wisely as possible. He warns, however, that the breaking of those laws is sin, and sin will bring punishment from God. The Bible declares in Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death…. The Bible teaches there is only one God. The Bible says in Deuteronomy 4:39:Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD He is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.Because God is so great and glorious He calls Himself by many different names. Each name tells us something about the glorious character and nature of God. Thus in the Bible we find such names as God, Jehovah, Christ, Jesus, Lord, Allah, Holy Spirit, Savior, etc. Names such as Jehovah, Jesus, Savior, and Christ particularly point to God as the only means by which forgiveness from all of our sins and eternal life can be obtained by God’s merciful and glorious actions. For more information on this subject, you may request a free copy of I Hope God Will Save Me. Many books have been written about the Bible, or are regarded as additions to the Bible, like the Koran or the Book of Mormon. But however old or prestigious or well- accepted as a holy book they may be, no book other than the Bible is written by God Himself, and is Holy as the Bible is Holy. God warns in Revelation 22:18:For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book. The word “plagues” in this verse refers to the punishment of death and destruction that will come upon all those who sin. The Bible teaches that even though God loves this world, which He in His infinite wisdom created, the law of God requires that those who sin must be punished by death. The Bible says in Ezekiel 18:20: The soul that sinneth, it shall die. In Romans 3:10 the Bible declares: There is none righteous [has not sinned], no, not one. God must also obey His law and therefore, since all the people of the world are sinners, He finally must destroy the world. It is evident that sin in the world has become very great. The Bible warns in Jeremiah 25:33:And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground. However, the Holy Bible tells us that Holy God is a God of great mercy, compassion and love. That is why He has given us in advance of the destruction the exact time of the Day of Judgment. The Bible tells us in Amos 3:7:Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but He revealeth his secret unto His servants the prophets.Consequently we now can know from the Bible the exact time and many details of God’s destruction plan that is to come upon the whole world. While there is still time we can very humbly cry to God for His gracious mercy. Maybe, since God is such a merciful God, He might forgive someone who is humbly pleading with God for mercy. God promises for example in Zephaniah 2:3:Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought His judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’S anger.Holy God demonstrates for us that He is completely able to bring destruction on this whole world because of sin. The Holy Bible informs us of this awesome fact in Genesis 6:12-13:And God looked upon the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth.By careful study of the Bible we learn that in the year 4990 B.C. (Before Christ) God brought a flood of water and destroyed the entire earth except for eight people and the animals that were with them. They were not destroyed because God brought them into the safety of the ark. Their leader, Noah, had obeyed God’s command to build a huge boat, called an ark, about 450 feet (137 meters) long. The Holy Bible tells us in Hebrews 11:7:By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.Seven days before the beginning of the Flood that completely covered the entire earth, God commanded Noah to warn the peoples of the world that they had seven days to get into the safety of the ark. The Holy Bible tells us that on the 17th day of the 2nd month of that year God shut the door of the ark. Then, the Flood began to completely cover the entire earth.About 5,000 years later God wrote in His Holy Bible in 2 Peter Chapter 3 about this worldwide destruction by water in the days of Noah. In the same chapter He also warned that the time would come when Holy God would destroy the whole world by fire. Our entire universe would be forever destroyed. In between these two declarations of worldwide destruction that would come because of sin God made a very important statement. God declared in 2 Peter 3:8:But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.God had written in the Holy Bible in Genesis 7:4:For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.God added in Genesis 7:10-11:And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the Flood were upon the earth. In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. The ark that Noah had built was the only place of safety from the destruction of the Flood. Likewise, God’s gracious mercy is the only place of safety from the destruction that is coming on the Day of Judgment. In 2 Peter 3:8, which is quoted above, Holy God reminds us that one day is as 1,000 years. Therefore, with the correct understanding that the seven days referred to in Genesis 7:4 can be understood as 7,000 years, we learn that when God told Noah there were seven days to escape worldwide destruction, He was also telling the world there would be exactly 7,000 years (one day is as 1,000 years) to escape the wrath of God that would come when He destroys the world on Judgment Day. Because Holy Infinite God is all-knowing, He knows the end from the beginning. He knew how sinful the world would become.Seven thousand years after 4990 B.C. (the year of the Flood) is the year 2011 A.D. (our calendar). 4990 + 2011 – 1 = 7,000 [One year must be subtracted in going from an Old Testament B.C. calendar date to a New Testament A.D. calendar date because the calendar does not have a year zero.]Thus Holy God is showing us by the words of 2 Peter 3:8 that He wants us to know that exactly 7,000 years after He destroyed the world with water in Noah’s day, He plans to destroy the entire world forever. Because the year 2011 A.D. is exactly 7,000 years after 4990 B.C. when the flood began, the Bible has given us absolute proof that the year 2011 is the end of the world during the Day of Judgment, which will come on the last day of the Day of Judgment.Amazingly, May 21, 2011 is the 17th day of the 2nd month of the Biblical calendar of our day. Remember, the flood waters also began on the 17th day of the 2nd month, in the year 4990 B.C.The Holy Bible gives several additional astounding proofs that May 21, 2011 is very accurate as the time for the Day of Judgment. For more information on this subject, you may request a copy of We Are Almost There, available free of charge from Family Radio.God is proving to us that we have very accurately learned from the Holy Bible God’s time-plan for the end of the world.GOD’S SUBLIME MERCY AND COMPASSION God in His Holy Bible has given us a beautiful example of His compassionate mercy. Included in the Holy Bible is the book called Jonah. In it God tells of a very wicked city with a population of more than 120,000 people that existed about 2,800 years ago. It was called Nineveh, which was a capital city of the nation of Assyria that knew nothing of the Bible. But because of its wickedness and because Holy God is merciful, He sent a prophet named Jonah to that city. Jonah’s message from God to them was that in 40 days the whole city was to be destroyed. The whole city correctly believed with all their hearts that this warning was from Holy God. Thus from the king on down to the lowest servant they repented, which means they turned away from their sins and their pride. The Holy Bible tells us that they sat in sackcloth and ashes. This meant that they fully realized that because of their sins they had dreadfully shamed God. To put on sackcloth and ashes was an act of supreme humility to show in the clearest way to God and to all of the people how greatly they were humbled by their sins against Holy God. It showed that they knew that they fully deserved that God should destroy them because of their sin.But maybe, there was hope that Holy God might change His mind and instead have mercy on them. The Bible tells us in Jonah 3:6-9:For the word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?In answer to their complete humility we read of God’s fabulous, incomprehensible mercy toward these extremely wicked people. God tells us in Jonah 3:10:And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that He had said that He would do unto them; and He did it not.Because this entire wicked city of Nineveh turned from their evil ways and with great humility cried to God for mercy, Holy God did change His mind and did not destroy them.Sadly, the Holy Bible tells us that only a small percentage of today’s world will turn from their evil ways, and with great humility and fear will cry to God for mercy. Nevertheless, the Bible assures us that many of the people who do beg God for His mercy will not be destroyed. We learn from the Bible that Holy God plans to rescue about 200 million people (that is about 3% of today’s population). On the first day of the Day of Judgment (May 21, 2011) they will be caught up (raptured) into Heaven because God had great mercy for them. This is why we can be so thankful that God has given us advance notice of Judgment Day. Because God is so merciful, maybe He will have mercy on you. The Holy Bible says in Psalm 51:17:The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. And in Psalm 51:1-3 Holy God shows us the attitude we ought to have as we pray for His mercy:Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.Sadly, you can’t turn to your religion or go to your priest or pastor or spiritual leader for help. They, too, should be begging God for mercy for themselves. This is a matter only between you and Holy God. God knows every one of your thoughts, words, and actions. Turn away from your sins and humbly beg, beseech, and implore God for forgiveness. And, thank God that in His great mercy He has given you this warning of the destruction that is almost here, and the great hope that you, too, might be one whom God will bring to Heaven to be with God forevermore in the highest happiness and joy and glory. Holy God in the Holy Bible teaches us in Luke 18:10-14:Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.May God have mercy on you as He did on this publican. Attacking West???? West is doing the attacking. And one can only wonder if he would still be doing it had he not gotten snubbed by the president. Face it, this is a personal deal with West pulling out all stops cause his feelings got hurt. Stop the ridiculousness in trying to defend his actions as something of substance.

If he had come from a place of pure criticism and not launching a “hell hath no fury like Cornel West scorned” I might take his words more seriously. But with all that in the mix I cannot. And you ought to be ashamed of yourself knowing that it’s personal and still trying to make it out to be of substance.

    Get a life.

  • Tulsacrimemonthly

When these guys like West and Smiley talk about Obama pursuing some kind of “Black Agenda,” it is utterly ridiculous.  Of course, he (Obama) is sympathetic with the plight of Black Americans, but more White people voted for Obama, than Black people.
Also, Cornel West is so esoteric in whatever he says, who really understands him anyway. I’ve never been a fan of Smiley or West.  This is not to say that they aren’t decent men, both are.  But I know for a fact, that had Obama taken the time to buddy up to each of these fellows, they would have a different take on the President.  In my opinion, it is a Black jealousy thing, just silly and childish.
Dr. Eric Dyson, on the other hand, is a very intellectual and analytical person.  He is the most honest, and intellectual spokesperson among the Blacks that I have observed.
Isn’t Cornel West some kind of Preacher?  I know that Smiley’s mother is some kind of evangelist.  Even Dyson is some kind of preacher.  Why are all Blacks preachers?
The Black that I admire, more so than any other Black in this country, is Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, a Black astrophysicist.  We need more scientists, and less preachers.
Any pimp and two bit hustler can be a preacher.  But it takes an extraordinary man to achieve the status of a scientist.
You fools always hollering “Jesus this,” and “Jesus that.”  And the letter “J” was not even in the English alphabet until roughly 400 years ago.  Read more, study more, research more, and you’ll be more intelligent.

@cb35c9fa60eaa69726896609318bf517:disqus :  I am not a religious person, I am a spiritual person.  Can’t imagine what it was in my response that led you to that conclusion.   Nothing against religious people – I just happen not to be one.  And I certainly hope you are not implying that I cannot participate in a BEAR discussion because I am female, no one can be that dumb.

Anyway, A G A I N, nothing in your response proposed an option other than supporting President Obama and encouraging him to go in the direction we want – a courtesy extended to all other presidents.   I am still waiting for SOMEONE to acknowledge that thet man has been in office only a little over 2 years and explain to me what miracle he should have worked in that time frame.   It bothers me that all these ‘black’ folk are harping on and criticizing Obama but gave all these past white presidents a pass.   What have YOU done to help our President accomplish all these things you want him to do in 2 short years ??   And complaining doesn’t count !!

It has been said that one of the things that keeps blacks from advancing is that we do not help and support each other the way other races do.  So many of us act like crabs in a barrel  – each time one of us makes progress toward the top and gets close to escaping, someone in the barrel starts pulling him/her back down.  Jealousy and envy are terrible traits that can stifle the success of many.   All white people have to do is plant a seed then set back and watch us destroy each other.

So Cornel West didn’t get invited to the White House and President Obama didn’t make Travis’  little meeting.   GET OVER IT !!    Do something for your race for a change.   The reality is that politics exist and those of us (including you and Dr.Boyce) who are not in the hot seat are not aware of all the details that might hinder navigation through the political maze.   So stop holding Obama to a higher standard than other presidents by expecting him to walk on water without getting his feet wet.   Geeeez !!

    • Alex

Hey Sister Diannkirby, in my post I referred to you as a SPIRITUAL person, look again. And no, you been female certainly does not disqualify you to lead or be called a BEAR if you so chose. Our history is full of strong, mighty sisters that led our people at various times and locations. And I have made no defense of west or smiley. Iv’e kept my point on the president. After all, he’s the one in the “hot seat” And as far as the limited time he’s been in office, thats irrelevant since he’s found time to address jews and others. I dont know about you, but I learned early on “CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME THEN SPREADS ABROAD.

      • Ronniesaunders

Alex: I have enjoyed many of your noteworthy comments. Have you ever read Frantz Fanon’s great book titled Black Skin/ White Mask?
Dr. West may have his faults like all human beings but his critique of Obama is legitimate and justified.
In order to understand Dr West’s  critique of Obama you have to read Fanon and discuss the book in the contex with an enlightened focus group.

        • Alex

Ronnie, I haven’t read the book but I will seek it out. Thanks.

        • Yepme2

I have read many of your responses as I have others and I went to your site and read quite a bit of your presentations.  My assessment, your experience and analytical appreciation is void of the psychological trap of the word morality.  Morality is not a companion of survival.  In a capitalistic society, whatever the endeavor, money equalizes opportunities and advantages.  In these times, economical advantages should be the topic of discussion.

We have nothing to gain discussing politicians other than how we intend to buy them, like everyone else that are recipients of their favors.

I suggest we communicate and exchange thoughts on methods of developing (P.R.E.S) Perpetual Revenue Energy System.  I have more than (27) years of research and a legal strategy to implement mathematical revenue systems.  I have a documented system that can not be denied its value, when assessed from a mathematical perspective.

I did not see a direct e-mail to you on your site and I do not want to go through face-book or any other communicating systems other than the one we are exercising for the time.

    • Yepme2

On the plantation, there is only (2) positions,”House & Field.  Those on top, do not give power to those at the bottom.  Obama is an illusion of hope for people to embrace, while the robber barons expand their wealth at the expense of the unorganized potential power.  How is Obama going to serve you, when his paymaster is those in the power position.  The people running the show, will extinguish anyone that gets in their way, they are not playing games, think of King, Kennedy (John & Bob), Malcolm and many others, the list is long.

It is a proven factor, if you assess reality effectively, the way to usurp power maniacs is to buy, buy, buy.  Look at the Asians, they hardly participate in the political system other than to buy, the jews are a minority at the voting booth, but have the most influence over the political system.  Politicians do not respond to the voter, they respond to the buyer, they are for sale.

It is insane to think, the power people on top is going to flip to the bottom, because you asked them to.  In order for drastic change, you have to learn how to flip.

On the plantation, some of the field slaves were so jealous of the house slaves they did everything they could to discredit them.   You ask how Obama is going to serve me but who serves you  – that white woman you are probably sleeping with ?   Obama wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth but he did get to choose which race he wanted to identify with and he chose the black race.   It would have been so much easier for him to play the white man’s game but he CHOSE not to.   And with his smarts and looks and charm, he could have had any white woman he wanted but he chose a black woman.

You so called black ‘intellectuals’ still haven’t been able  to answer my one question about what YOU have done for the black community.  If you are so smart that you know better than Obama what he should be doing, why didn’t you run for President and win so that YOU could accomplish all thos things ?   I guess it is much easier to just sit back and complain.   You may think that makes you look smart but most of us can see that the Emperor has no clothes.   So when I ask what YOU have done and I don’t get any response, that vacuum says it all.

        • Yepme2

Is it that bad with you, to assume I am sleeping with a white  woman? Your emotions are overwhelming you with artificial assumptions and your worship of a mythical flawless man of your desires, diminish your capacity to embrace reality as security.  Should I ask your permission to express my thoughts about someone rendering decisions that affect my life? You did not seek my permission to rattle off emotional tirades about me.

I did not finish high school and you classify me as an intellectual, perhaps we should look forward to your elementry school graduation.

My remarks do not state what Obama should be doing, can you disprove any of the statements rendered?  Statements of facts were expressed, that you do not comprehend, so you jump to conclusions relating to subject matters that leaves you clueless.

People are doing things all the time in the community, that you are not aware of.  Thinking I am smart is not an occupation, the estacy of knowing I am not supid is gratifying.

  • oren elow

Just look at what we are doing arguing again among our black-selves. We need no other race to split us up, we do a great job of splitting ourselves up. Here are two cool Black men, West and Travis hating on Obama about black incarceration . . . however, they said nothing about President Clition allowing the CORI law to go through on his watch. So many black men are in jail and prison today because of the CORI law. I don’t see West or Travis fighting to get this law change so that prisoners coming out of prison might find jobs and housings for themselves.

For over 25 years, now, the justice and prison system have been incarcerating Black and Latino by the thousands, to where the prison system is over-packed with colored souls. Why didn’t West and Travis speak out then, why didn’t they get out in the street with Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, NAACP, etc. Nevertheless, I hope that West, though he’s late, continue helping, caring and speaking out for the brother and sisters who’s incarcerated! And Travis, my brother, I thought you were much to hip to be down on the President because he’s Black.

May God bless the red folk, the black folks, the colored  folk, the white folks, and the Yellow folks, and may God bless President Barrack Obama.

Now let us all sake hands and be “one.”

  • Leart2

I’m still trying to figure out why some people, Black and White are trying to elevate these type people to Black Leadership Status. Dr. West is a School Teacher and part time Book Writer, for the most part.  I don’t know of him having a leadership position of anything connected to the Black Community.

  • Jennifer

I find it hypocritical for Cornel West to level cticisms against President Obama, even though  he continues to live in mainstream America, making money educating white students.  His marriage ended, and to the best of my knowledge he does not live in the ghetto. West and Smiley enjoy hearing themselves talk, even though what they are saying is not substative.  Until they fight for better schools, jobs, and healthcare, they will both remain just talkers.  They do a disservice to black people by spewing the same kind of hatred promoted by whites against the President, even though they ain’t white!

  • Charles

What an interesting place we Black folks find ourselves. Faced with a similar dilemma in 1972 there came to be the Black Political Convention hosted by Mayor Richard Gordon Hatcher. That Convention was saved by Brother Amiri Baraka with his proviso: “Unity without Uniformity.” With some 350 Black elected and appointed officials in America at that time, we now have some 16,500. It is my view that we need a new Black Political Convention, not an event driven by Valerie Jarrett’s Farsi. The passion and commitment of Brother Baraka and Sister Fannie Lou Hamer is what is needed. We can solve this dilemma, but not with the half-breeds calling the shots. We need Black power, not Tiger Woods, Lisa Jackson, Ben Jealous and Kamala Harris speaking for the downtrodden and incarcerated. They do not know my story. I began my education in a one-room Rosenwald School in rural Oklahoma.

  • Evolutionary

I don’t agree with Boyce at all in this article.  The issue that West and Smiley have with Pres. Obama goes back to the 2008 election (when Tavis had a tantrum for not getting the participation he thought he deserved at the State of Black Union even though Pres. Obama participated in his Democratic Forum three months prior to the Union event) AND their own perceived snub from not being invited to the White House to discuss the “so-called” black agenda. These men are talking loud and saying nothing.  Tavis has been a friend to the Clintons but has never demanded what he is demanding of Pres. Obama as it relates to black people.  He and West are upset because they no longer feel relevant or have a seat at an influential table – the President’s table.  They are still asleep while a number of us woke up in 2008 to a new inspiration and a dedication to self help and self determination – those are the virtues that have been and will always be the new Black Power.  Pres. Obama’s election demands a new kind of leadership for black people – lead those CITIZENS who want to participate in this democracy not those who hold onto claiming victimhood (i.e. sagging, slanging and disrespecting their own communities).  Simply put, it’s a new day.  Free your mind and break away from anyone or anything that keeps you in bondage.

At first I thought you were writing about U.S. Rep. Allen West of  Florida.  He is a conservative Republican, articulate, sharp and well spoken as VP Joseph Biden would say..  Does Allen accept any responsibility in relationshipo Black American issues?

  • Teresa

Perhaps the Congressional Black Caucus should actually do their job.  I find it incredible that those folks represent communities which apparently do not receive corrective constitutent services of any magnitude.  The answer, stop voting them in and send others to Congress in their stead.  Regarding President Obama:  since when did the chief executive become the person to change the world?  Barack Obama was quite clear during his campaign that he is one person, but together we can do much.  Start where you are in your local community. Black children in failing schools have parents who should be outraged and contacting ~ daily, if necessary ~ their local and state representatives.  I also think that parents need to teach their children to live law abiding lives. We act as if because there is racism, the law enforcement community is simply swooping into communities and picking folks up and incarcerating them. This is not the case.  Yes, there is racism, but black folks used to know not to put yourself in situations that can lead to criminal charges. Again, if there is a problem with what is going on in your community, the place to start is with your local and state government.  There are no utopias, there is only the difficult work of one step at a time, beginning with our families.  There are no human saviors.  Each of us must do our part to ensure healthy families and to hold politicians accountable.

Hey, we all should realize that our president knows white folks a lot better than most of us do. Cornell is right in a way but Cornell knows you cant “bum rush” white folks. Down through the years we have either danced for them or outsmarted them.  Let Obama work his show, I think he knows what he is doing and just happens to be the right man at the right time to do the right job. Eh?

I find myself hoping that Professor Cornel West will allow me to sing in his choir of taking points about Obama’s shortcomings with regard to Black Americans. In truth West’s talking points create a presidency that values the future of Black America beyond the arc of Obama’s tenure. Given the absence of Black Americans in Obama’s inner circle I am sure the old negro spiritual YES WE CAN will not be in my ipod..

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH RENEE GREENE.  DR. BOYCE IS ALSO CONFUSED ON THIS ISSUE

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Iris-Boyd/611306703 Iris Boyd

Boyce, attacking President Obama doesn’t solve it either, it only
undermines him.  You, Cornel, Tavis and other black “leaders” are guilty
of making us believe that only the government can rescue us from all of
our problems, thus having done nothing but nurture the slave mentality
that has plagued us for generations.

Boyce, the Government cannot solve all of our problems, however they can
provide the resources we need to help us solve our own issues, and
that’s where our black leaders come into play.  We NEED our leaders to
keep us informed of what new laws have passed or even laws that have
already passed that we can benefit from. You have the platform to do it.
It doesn’t have to be geared specifically towards African Americans, but we can
still take advantage of them. Unfortunately, we can’t even rely on you
all to do that because you’re too focused on the fact that the president
doesn’t have an token administration, where there has to be a equal
number of blacks per whites to make you feel good. I don’t give a shit
who is in his cabinet, as long as, they are QUALIFIED to do their job

President Obama welcomes criticism, but not DUMB criticism, Not only
it’s dumb but counterproductive. Cornel didn’t help us, he was just
venting his personal feelings against a president whom he felt jilted
him after the elections, which is completely ridiculous. How can Cornel
think that he can start supporting him late in the game (which was only
self-serving) and expect to be a part of his inner circle.  Then dismiss
the folks who have supported Obama from day one doing some real work to
help him get elected or the fact that the Obama Administration raised
100 times more than Cornel raised for him from individual donations from
    ordinary people giving $10 $20 $50 $100+.

BTW Boyce, what do you think of your boy Cornel who has decided to
collaborate with whites to throw the election, making sure that us
black folks do get to eat some of that manure.

    Cornel West=Black Puppet, Black Mascot

  • Anonymous

If Cornel West is soooo concerned about the poor and underrepresented masses of black people in America, why hasn’t he left his ivy league job at Princeton, left his white companion, and moved back to the urban core of poverty, while using some of his accumulated earnings to open schools to educate black kids in particular but all minority students in general, and providing black educators jobs to instruct these populations?  He is a hypocrite and to date the greatest example of what capitalism can do to a black man, who believes he is as white as the white man, yet kicks his own in the teeth.  Making scandalous money and sleeping with white folks provides a voice to support their preferences, and minimize the issues of poverty among black people in America.  Afterall, poverty in America is big business, and West is no different.  If he didn’t love money soooo much, he never would have divorced his wife and left the raising of his black children to someone else to begin a love affair with some white woman.  He needs to clean up his image, get a haircut and get them teeth straightened out.

Black men who make mainstream dollars are always leaving their black wives and black children to experience white women, to elevate themselves.  Finally, if West wants to be able to act a fool on the national front, he does not have much more to do.  He has not done anything to embrace his own blackness, except to denigrate President Obama and educate white students in his African American classes at Princeton.  He can keep on sounding like a black Republican and presenting himself as a “black man” but he becomes darker when he maligns President Obama.  West’s fight like all of our fights should be about the unequal representation on the local and state level.

If West was as attentive to his local and state politics and who is doing who, these comments would be relevant.  Neither West nor Smiley has attacked the state representatives and governors, or the elected city officials on the conditions of the black community.  It is clearly a personal attack on what West perceives as an oversight by President Obama to invite him to his inaugural, and for Smiley for declining a visit to his now defunct “State of Black America, ” which was broadcast the same day Candidate Obama announced his run for the Presidency in Springfield, Illinois.  Both are demonstrating their pettiness and ineptitude as voices of the black community, and clearly have stepped over a line.  I heard West say, he was going to keep Presdient in line, as if West has the power to do something other than what he is trying to do, which is to derail President Obama’s bid for reelection.  West is more of a house slave than the Leader of the Free World, because he will say or do whatever his white masters instruct him to do.  West is toxic and does a disservice to the black community in whining about what Barack Obama has not done, when in fact he writes books that people, the poor and the rich, buy even though most of his rhetoric ends up selling for $2 and $3 in fine bookstores.

Black students are not being educated because they want to have sex with white girls and white teachers.  Black workers are not being hired because Rush Limbaugh told white business owners not to hire them, and to get rid of the blacks on the payroll so eventually the business could be sold.  Black patients are not receiving quality healthcare, because people from other countries are preserving the healthcare miracles for white patients, while black participants in clinical studies are used as test subjects to determine if certain medications work either to improve or kill us off completely.  Black homeowners are being foreclosed because whites sold them properties that were overpriced and unaffordable and did not care where the pieces fell.

West has a lot to learn about America, and he now spends time visiting areas in this country to discover footprints of black folks.  He and Tavis are inseparable, and I would question that also.  Both feel jilted by Candidate and President Obama for personal reasons, and have now begun a crusade like the Tea Partiers to overthrow the government through their use of black media, even though neither live the experience of being black at this time.  I don’t see where either of them went back to their respective communities to bring somebody along with them to teach them what they know.

West can now be identified as a reinvented negro (or dead man), making big money and dangerously denigrating the black people while sleeping with white women.   West is being paid to overthrow a national election when he probably doesn’t even have a word to say about leadership at the state or local levels.  West is damaged goods, and everyone now knows it.

Dr. Watkins your comments are so “right on,” you are speaking truth to power. I respect you and your opinion highly. Please keep the pessure on. So many of my family, friends and coworkers tell me that I am too hard on the President. So many of them feel he should not be held to task because he is Black. As our Beloved Brother Malcolm X said, “they are all the same, be they a Democrat, Republican, Liberal or Dixiecrat, they all support the status quo.
