Will.i.am Thinks Condoms are Tacky

It appears that Will.i.am from The Black Eyed Peas is determined to ruin his career.  In a recent interview with Elle Magazine, the singer said that he feels that condoms are “tacky” if he finds them in a woman’s house.  An excerpt of the interview is below:

Elle: If you walked into a woman’s house, what one item would convince you that you weren’t compatible?

W: If she had condoms in her house, that would just f[—]in’ throw me off. That’s just tacky.

Elle: Well, okay, I could see if she had a candy bowl full of them on the coffee table. But if she’s got a few in a drawer, wouldn’t that simply suggest she’s health-conscious?

W: I just think, like, if you’re into someone and you guys get to that level, then that’s something you should converse about together and say, “Hey, maybe we should get some.”

I do not think Will.I.AM.’s comments are in opposition of safe sex. I believe he is actually stating that whenever you decide to have sex it should be with someone you have been dating for a while and there should be a conversation involved before becoming sexually active- it should be a planned situation. He feels that if there are condoms just lying around- the lady may be a bit too involved in “casual sex”.. something impromptu and unplanned. Which is a bit tacky.

Agreed. I think many people react to the headline and think this is a dig against safe sex. As the commenter @143d3d081efdb27a7aee744ea59ed245:disqus  said, there is some nuance here. The headline title doesnt capture the full picture. There are two parts to the HIV epidemic. Unprotected sex of course AND unfaithful casual sex.
